Done a bit more now, however - now everything (except this blog, as it uses blogger-specific code which won't validate [and the applet page, but that's not meant to be permament anyway]) is both CSS and xhtml valid!

i use the same internet explorer, but i can not see any thing change.
The change is in the code and the way things work, rather than the way things look:
Before I was using not-yet-supported alpha filtering as well as deprecated alpha filtering.
Now the page does the same trick using two pictures rather than one - it increases the file size a bit, but greatly reduces processor strain and makes everything validate correctly.
